Be Specific: Most often, miscommunication comes as the result of a lack of information. When you are too vague, your listener has to fill in all the blanks on their own, and it’s likely not going to be the way you would have.

To avoid this, simply be as specific as possible. Sometimes this is just choosing a better word (example: efficient instead of good) while other times it means taking an extra five minutes to paint a more complete picture. Both of these mean more “work” for you, but in the long run it’ll save you time and energy that might’ve otherwise been spent on a frustrating (and completely avoidable) back-and-forth.

Why It Matters: Because unexpected events happen. Whether it’s a major repair to your car or house, loss of a job, or even an unforeseen illness or injury, being prepared sets you up for the unexpected.

Error: Tone Ignorance, Not Considering Possible Misinterpretations.

Reason: In print, the person with whom you’re communicating cannot hear your voice. So some things - like directives or even questions - can come off as defensive or rude if you’re not careful. (This happens while texting, too.)

Fix: Always pay attention to how you’re wording things, especially if you know your audience to be the type that offends easily. And when in doubt, some extra niceness can remove the ambiguity.

We’ve heard laughter is the best medicine, but video games?!? “Akili Interactive announced it will release its video game treatment for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) to adults.” They already have an FDA-cleared version for children, released two years ago; if you’re curious, you can check it out here.

🛒 WALGREENS:

They’ve unveiled a redesigned store in Chicago “where most of the merchandise is intentionally kept out of sight.” Huh? “Most everything you expect to find at the drugstore is kept in an in-store fulfillment area [and] can only be accessed through a kiosk system.” So you go to the store, you order the item you want via tablet, it’s retrieved by an employee, and then you leave the store. And they say this is NOT about preventing theft 😉
