The Art of Micro Talk:
This article from Psychology Today was too good to pass up.
TL;DR: Small-talk is crucial to “making friends, building trust in new acquaintances, easing into deeper conversations, or navigating unfamiliar social settings,” but nowadays we often feel too busy to engage.
Enter Micro Talk: you can use these concise forms of language to replace typical, often-rambling small-talk while still reaping the same rewards.
Two tips for utilizing micro talk to your advantage:
* Master Your Nonverbal Cues - body language and facial expressions are the most obvious, but there are also non-verbal actions you can take when opportunity arises to convey an emotion or character trait (Example: stacking plates after eating out to convey gratitude or helpfulness to the server).
* Don’t Be Shy - Say Hello! - regular hellos with new acquaintances build upon each other and open the door for real relationships, which may be especially vital when networking, building a small business, etc.
Main Takeaway: When you’re too busy for casual conversation, a nod, a smile, a simple “Hi” can still do wonders.
Conversation Starters 🗣
SELF-INTEREST: Talk about moving to Minnesota (or Utah, or New Hampshire) so you too can be among the least-stressed people in the United States.
HUAMN INTEREST: Talk about TikTok’s Doctor Mike and his tips for longevity. He has 11 million YouTube subs and 2.1 million on TikTok.
ARTIFICAL INTEREST: Talk about how you and your colleague’s can “futureproof” your careers despite the rise of AI.
Major Moves 🗞️
👋 DISNEY:
What did they do with their business in India? They “Let It Go.”

Tenor
There has been a lot of talk lately about Disney selling off various properties, and it looks like that talk was legit: “Reliance is nearing a deal to acquire Disney’s India business, according to a report, as Mukesh Ambani’s oil-to-telecom empire eyes broadening digital and television assets.”
The two sides are still a couple billion apart re: valuation, but that’s peanuts to these giants. Reports expect the deal to close as early as next month.
🖥️ anyplace:
Work from anywhere, comfortably…

Midjourney
Formerly a hospitality startup, Anyplace pivoted in 2022 to give “remote workers and corporate travelers [the ability] to work from anywhere with furnished apartments that include a ‘fully equipped’ home office.”
The pivot seems to have worked - they just doubled their valuation with an $8.27M Series B funding round.
🤝 swapdesk:
How about another startup that wants you to WFA?

Midjourney
Similar to Anyplace (featured above), Swapdesk wants you to stop working from home. Well, from your home at least. “The home-exchange startup is targeting remote workers who can temporarily trade places.”
The company is focusing their growth phase on high-profile cities like New York, London, and Paris, and the appeal is that “trading a home is far less expensive than a hotel or short-term rental.”
💳️ AMERICAN EXPRESS:
Reporting BIG earnings!

MIdjourney
Last year’s Q3 saw American Express earn $2.47 per share. So this year, analysts didn’t expect a particularly big jump - they estimated $2.94 per share. Well, they were wrong: “The financial services giant reported earnings of $2.45 billion, or $3.30 per share.”
Despite inflation and resumption of student loan payments, people are spending plenty on travel and entertainment, which many attribute to AmEx’s record quarter.
