If you missed it last week: "Sundar Pichai, Google’s CEO, said in an email sent to the company’s staff that the firm will lay off 12,000 employees." This comes in after Amazon and Microsoft made their own cuts...

openAI:

Wow. "Microsoft announced that it’s extending its partnership with OpenAI, the startup behind art- and text-generating AI systems like ChatGPT and GPT-3, with a 'multi-year, multi-billion-dollar' investment." 😱

SPOTIFY:

The music giant is making workforce cuts. They currently employ ~9,800 people. "Spotify sent an internal memo to staff announcing plans to lay off 6% of its workforce, or about 600 employees." Check out more on this below.

Defense is good offense. "Thoma Bravo, the private equity and growth capital firm, announced that it would spend $1.8 billion CAD (~$1.34 billion) to acquire Magnet Forensics." MF develops digital investigation software. 👇

What the heck is Securities Fraud?

Short and Sweet: It is an illegal or unethical activity involving securities (meaning stocks, for example) in order to make money at someone else's expense.

Why it matters: This is important to know because outside of believing in a new start-up and its vision, we should also do our recon on the founders as best we can. (Speaking of, here's the latest on the biggest securities fraud case in recent memory with SBF.)
