04/11 |#012| We Discuss Two Principles Of Persuasion

Plus: Before you can reel them in, you first have to hook them 🪝 Why does bankruptcy matter? We'll tell ya. Also, improve everyday and watch what happens a year from now ⏳

Tuesday Edition: April 11th, 2023

Good morning! We’re in a day and age where selling stuff online is becoming the norm, so we’re confident the Expert Advice section will be helpful to everyone. #PrinciplesOfPersusaionAre 🔑

The Big & The Small 📰

WALMART:

Amazon’s biggest rival is separating themselves by…making a commitment to electric vehicles? “Walmart plans to install EV fast-chargers at thousands of Walmart and Sam’s Club locations across the US by 2030.” Bezos plans to respond by drone-dropping an EV charger on your doorstep later this afternoon (just kidding…we hope).

ensemble:

This venture capital outlet says founders aren’t everything. “[Ensemble] believes you need to consider every crew member helping to steer the ship, not just the ones who got it off the ground.” They raised $100 million for their debut fund, so seems like the idea has legs. Who would’ve thought? 👇️

SAMSUNG:

The tech giant is cutting memory chip production in an effort to reduce inventory and save money because, well…”[They] warned investors that it’s a shocking 95.8% year-over-year drop in operating profit for Q1 2023.” This could be the company’s worst quarter since 2009 (dating back to the company’s pre-smart phone era). It’s wild how quickly the tables can turn.

carbonwave:

Boston-based startup that recycles seaweed has raised a total of $12.9 million and already has multiple contracts in the Sunshine State. Just in time, too. “The largest-ever blob of Sargassum seaweed is currently floating toward Florida’s west coast.” Can’t we just get a bunch of sushi restaurants to help out?

A Tuesday pick-me-up:

Finance 101 🤑

What the heck is Bankruptcy?

Short and Sweet: It’s a legal proceeding that happens when a person or a business is not able to repay outstanding debts or obligations due.

Why it matters: Because it’s an important term to know when we remain in a stressed financial market. Remember, companies are cutting back on their expenses by laying off employees for example (cough cough, tech industry). Throw in rapidly declining sales, lower profits, minimal cash flows, and we could be talking BK, which is no bueno people…

Cool Communicator 😎

Before you can reel them in…you first have to hook them. Telling a story? Don’t take too long with the build-up. Making an argument? Lead with your strongest point. Whatever your reason for communicating, don’t expect your audience to stay locked in just because - make them lock in with something captivating.

Expert Advice 🗣️

A quick refresher: on 03/14, we introduced Robert Cialdini’s principles of persuasion. The first one was Reciprocation: people are wired to return favors so the more you give, the more you get back.

His next principle is Liking: people prefer to say Yes to individuals that they like. And most often, they like people that are similar to themselves.

If you’re relatable, you’ll be more likable; if you’re more likable, you’ll be more persuasive. Highlight the similarities between you and your target audience, and watch your sales take off!
