🚘️ The Fortune 500 tech company has acquired Israeli startup Autotalks, which makes communication chips with an eye toward car accident prevention. “Autotalk’s tech is used in sensors that help vehicles…and their drivers detect road hazards.” The reported sale price is between $350 and $400 million.

permitflow:

🚧 Love to see a good idea get rewarded. “PermitFlow, a San Jose-based startup developing software for developers and general contractors to streamline the construction permit application and management process, secured $5.5 million in seed funding.” If you’ve ever been through this process, you know how badly the world needs this tech.

CHRISTMAS TREE SHOPS:

🎄 Say it ain’t so: “Home goods retailer Christmas Tree Shops filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Friday…” The article points out that it may only be a financial restructuring, but still - grandmothers everywhere are terrified! 😨

👏 The Australian EdTech company has acquired Blinkist, famous for turning long non-fiction books into fifteen-minute blinks. The goal is to “expand its reach and technology to serve the market of corporate online learning.” As big believers in short and sweet, On The Fly approves this move!

What the heck is a Chapter 11 Bankruptcy?

Short & Sweet: It lets a company stay in business so they can restructure their obligations (debt for example). ICYMI, we talked about what bankruptcy was in a previous edition.

Why it matters: Because there are a couple forms of bankruptcy, such as Chapter 11 and Chapter 7. Its important to know the difference between the two, but in short, Chapter 7 = Ugly (Liquidation). Chapter 11 = Not As Ugly (Reorganization).

Takeaway: Re: the Christmas Tree Shops news we shared above, its important to know the distinction between the two as there is hope for a company when filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. They are trying to keep the Christmas lights on by restructuring those obligations!

Manners Still Matter! When living on the fly, sometimes it’s tempting to get to the point as quickly as possible…at the expense of politeness or cordiality. Don’t make that trade-off! Take the extra thirty seconds to be more effusive with your thanks, ask about someone’s family, or consider how to best word what you want to say.

You already know (and we’ve emphasized this in a previous edition): people will give you what you want if you’re likable. So be polite, and get the only likes that really matter.

Email Errors 🫠

Error: Skipping greeting and closing, writing informal emails.

Reason: The person receiving your email *may* take your hastiness as disrespectful. Am I not worth the time? How much do you really care about this?

Fix: Unless brevity has been pre-approved in the relationship, emails should begin with greetings and end with closings. Take the extra time, because it goes a long way.
