Tuesday Edition: May 23rd, 2023
Good morning! As we strive to grow OTF, we also want to pay it forward, recommending letters we think will benefit you. The new section is called Letter Link-Up, and it debuts below. If the synopsis sounds right to you, hit that blue button. #LettersHelpingLetters 💁
The Big & The Small 📰
TARGET:
🎯 Sometimes the obvious answer is the right one. “Same-day and next-day deliveries are becoming increasingly popular…and Target has been struggling to keep up. So the company came up with a rather intuitive solution: get [delivery] drivers to drive bigger vehicles.” A Lesson: before beginning the search for a genius solution, exhaust all the simple options 🧐
surgibox:
👩⚕️ Speaking of genius solutions: “Surgibox has developed a portable kit that doctors can use to create sterile operating environments where they’re needed most.” So, someone can’t get to a hospital for emergency surgery - think warzone, natural disaster, etc. - now the surgery comes to them 👏👏
neeva:
🤣 This quote is just too funny. “We’ve discovered that it is one thing to build a search engine, and an entirely different thing to convince regular users of the need to switch to a better choice.” The search engine recently shut down…just take the L, Neeva.
bluesky:
🔵 If you don’t know much about this Twitter competitor…that looks exactly like Twitter…that’s run by the guy who founded Twitter, then this is a good place to start. “The goal, essentially, is to undo all of Dorsey’s self-described mistakes, fixing social media and maybe, pie-in-the-sky hopefully, the whole internet in the process.” Nothing wrong with setting lofty goals though!
Letter Link-Up 🤜 🤛
It’s pretty cool to see a newsletter that mixes business with psychology. If you’d like to learn how that relationship works, this NL may be the one for you.
“Take your career to the next level with cutting-edge insights from the intersection of psychology and business. A weekly newsletter with research-supported ways to maximize your productivity and well-being.”
A-Pick-Me-Up:
Finance 101 🤑
What the heck is an Initial Public Offering?
Short & Sweet: It’s the process of offering shares of a private company to the public for the first time. The “IPO” allows a company to raise equity (money) from public investors.
Quick Story (courtesy of ChatGPT): Imagine you're starting a lemonade stand called "Cool Lemonade Co." and it's becoming really popular in your neighborhood. People are loving your lemonade so much that you decide to expand your business and open more stands in different places. But to do that, you need money. So, you decide to have an IPO, which means you offer to sell shares of your lemonade stand to people who want to invest. These people become part owners of your business and in return, you get the money you need to grow your lemonade empire.
Why It Matters: Because with a stressed financial market, many private companies continue to hold back on pursuing an IPO. However, check out the chart below on what companies are expected to IPO in 2023. We’re pretty sure you know some of them…
Digital Networking Hack 🤝
Join more communities! Have interest in a specific topic or field? Do you feel like you have knowledge in a certain area but don’t know who to link up with? Do some research and go engage in an online community. You can do this through a Discord or Slack channel and connect with like-minded individuals. Introduce yourself and connect with people who have similar interests.
Another strong starting point could be to participate in Twitter (or Bluesky) communities or LinkedIn groups relevant to your industry/interest to engage in conversations and share insights.
As the saying goes…
