Plus: How to Beat a Lagging Jobs Market

Welcoming you back to November’s Productivity Edition with something I posted on Threads the other day:

The point here is simple:

In the past, you had to work your way up the corporate ladder and pay your dues to get where you wanted to go.

But right now, there is a massive opportunity to jump up multiple levels - just by learning these tools before everyone else does.

AI is gonna change every industry, so:

Experience with AI > > > Experience in the Industry

I was gonna call it a great equalizer, but it’s better than that. And the answers to the test are right in front of us too.

So ask yourself: do I wanna play the game the old-fashioned way, or do I wanna get ahead now?

If you chose the latter (no pun intended), then let’s get After It.

AI HUMANS Prompted These Highlights!

WORKING WITH AI 🤖

Perplexity Comet = Browsing’s Newest SUPERSTAR.

Google Chrome, you had a good run. You played well, did everything you were supposed to do. Just like Drew Bledsoe.

But when the GOAT arrives, there’s nothing left for you to do but take a permanent seat on the bench.

That was my instinctive reaction when I stumbled across Perplexity Comet a couple weeks ago. Goodbye, old friend. Time to make way for a game-changer.

Let’s go through it👇️

Landing Page:

EXAMPLE:

Imagine you just bought a house and within six months you encounter a plumbing issue. The last thing you want to do is hire a plumber and spend even more money, so you decide it’s DIY Time.

The “Google Chrome” Way: You Google “How to Fix My Faucet,” scroll through tons of results, guess which video will educate you best, and click. Then you try fast-forwarding to the only portion you need, get frustrated that it doesn’t help, and give up.

The “Perplexity Comet” Way: You prompt the search bar with the same level of specificity we’ve been urging when using ChatGPT or Gemini. Something like:

The results are only results relevant to your very specific problem, complete with descriptions so you can make educated guesses about which resources to click on. All irrelevant results have been filtered out. *Google is shaking right now*

Now you might say, “Well, isn’t this just ChatGPT?”

At this stage, yes. But here comes the best part!

Note the word “Assistant” in the top right of the screenshot. I used this feature and asked it to “summarize this video in bullet points so I can easily understand. Then also give me a list of plumbers in the area just in case.”

BOOM: now you’re having an interactive conversation about your problem while the video plays on the same tab. You can also prompt the Assistant to:

  • Share best practices / tips when it comes to negotiating with plumbers.

  • Give you addresses and phone numbers for local plumbing businesses.

  • Define terms from the video you don’t understand.

  • Locate the parts you’ll need for the repairs.

  • So. Much. More.

TL;DR Takeaway:

It’s all about the Assistant. When you combine a powerful, focused browser with the skills of other elite AI tools, well, you get the new GOAT.

(Until a newer, better, more powerful one comes out next year 🤣)

I feel obligated to caution you, however, with how you use Perplexity Comet. At least at this early stage. My first experiences have been nothing but positive, but with Prof Mike always urging me to go deeper with my analysis and consider all angles and perspectives, I decided to look into the potential downsides of Comet. Here’s what I found, organized into a nice, neat little table courtesy of ChatGPT:

I haven’t used Perplexity for anything sensitive yet, so I can’t comment one way or another. I’ll do some more digging before I dive in that deep. But for research, there’s no going back. It’s Comet all the way.

ALWAYS INFORMED 🗞️

The Job Market is Booming…As Long As You Know AI

No matter where you go to get your news, you’ve probably heard negative things about the job market lately. Hiring has slowed, for any number of reasons, and the media has made the outlook seem bleak.

(Check the time stamps: I swear I posted my Threads before this article came out!)

Here are some of the highlights from the Axios article linked to above:

  • Even jobs in the tech industry are down…unless you have AI skills. “Mentions of AI skills in job postings rose 16% in three months even as overall tech hiring is down 27%.”

  • “Only 40% of business leaders say they’re satisfied with their company’s AI progress and partly blame a lack of skill among their workforce…”

  • AI hiring in San Francisco is up 23% year-over-year.

  • These skills aren’t just crucial for getting jobs; they’re also crucial for fattening that wallet: “Last year…machine learning engineering salaries skyrocketed 53% in just 15 months while software engineer pay crept up only 4%.”

  • The most in-demand AI skills on the market right now are all about data: data labeling, data annotation, data analysis, and data science.

Yet, “Human skills still matter,” specifically “curiosity” and “ability to learn fast and to adapt fast.”

Why not start now, so you can learn and adapt faster and more easily than your competition?

Just sayin.

DID YOU KNOW…🤖 đŸŚž đŸ¤–

  • Founded in 2022 in San Francisco, Perplexity’s leadership includes four AI and machine learning experts: Aravind Srinivas (CEO, formerly of OpenAI/DeepMind), Denis Yarats (CTO, ex-Meta), Johnny Ho (Strategy, ex-Quora/Tower Research), and Andy Konwinski (President, co-founder of Databricks).

  • They’ve raised a massive $1.22 billion in funding and are valued at $20 billion -making them one of the fastest-growing “unicorns” in tech. Notable investors include Jeff Bezos, NVIDIA, Daniel Gross, Tobias LĂźtke, and Stan Druckenmiller.

  • Roughly 53% of [~30 million] users are aged 18 to 34, showing strong adoption among younger audiences.
