Cool Communicator 😎
😏 Good Communication Requires Strategy
Bad communicators speak without thinking; good communicators are patient, attentive, and calculating. Because every situation is unique, each requires unique strategizing.
Here are the most important things to consider, and the questions you might want to ask yourself during such consideration.
(Note: If you’ve been with us since the beginning, this may be a bit of review for you, but a good reminder never can’t hurt.)
Audience - What do I know about them, and how can I use it to my advantage? What do they like/dislike? What are their strengths/weaknesses? What will grab and keep their attention?
Purpose - What do I want from them, and what must I do to get it? How must I present myself to achieve my purpose? What emotions can I stir up to help me get there? What evidence or support will drive my point home?
The moment you start asking yourself, “Who is my audience, and what is my purpose for communicating with them,” you instantly become a better communicator, even if you don’t change anything else about the way you speak and write.
O.T.F O.F.T = ONE FINAL THOUGHT
Eventually these considerations will become second nature, but in the beginning, you must pay attention to detail.
When your audience is speaking, you must listen carefully, not only because their voice is worth your time and respect, but also because it will give you information that you can later use to your benefit.
When thinking about your purpose, be as specific as possible. For example, it’s not enough to think, “I want this person to buy my product.” Think about how much you want them to spend, how you want them to feel, what questions you want them to ask, etc.
It may sound like extra work, but it’s worth it in the long run.
